Diving info

DIVING INFO

You will experience first-rate diving on our cruises. Our professional and experienced instructors and guides provide you with thorough briefing of the dive site before each dive as well as supervision on every dive. Our diving platform allows for easy embarkation and our two outboards (including 1 Yamaha speedboat affectionately named Ferrari, the other Lamborghini) take you directly to the open sea dive sites. With 2 compressors on board, you can expect to complete 3 to 4 dives per day, with alternating night dives. We also have full sets of high quality diving equipment available for rental. There is a hot shower on deck to rinse off easily before and/or after each excursion. Snorkelers are encouraged to join our trips as we make sure to offer a variety of explorative options for all of our guests. The abundance and diversity of coral species and the health of reef life ensure some of the most unparalleled diving and snorkelling in the world.

Species you may encounter

The species you may encounter but not limited to are:

Barracuda, surgeonfish, bumphead parrotfish, trevally and giant trevally, napoleon wrasse, wobbegong sharks, black and white tip reef sharks, tuna, bonito, oceanic  manta and mobula rays, seahorse, frogfish, leaf fish, scorpion fish and nudibranchs, to name a few. Pelagic species which include dolphins, whales and hammerhead sharks have also been encountered on our trips.

Black coral forests, gorgonian fields and a wide variety of soft corals are plentiful at the dive sites.

Currents

Particular dives on reefs or pinnacles must be done on the current exposed side to experience the best array of marine life, and can oftentimes be slightly rugged. Throughout the course of the trip, you will have the opportunity to take 3 dives per day, with alternating night dives. However, the number of dives per day, as well as the location and dive sites mentioned on itineraries may vary due to weather conditions and currents.

Visibility

Visibility is between 15 – 20 metres on average, but may be lower in specific areas or for shorter periods of time dependent upon weather conditions.

Diving experience required

Advanced level PADI/CMAS Level 2 or Higher, and with a minimum of 50 logged dives out at sea.

Temperature

The water temperature ranges from between 28-30 ° Celsius in the majority of areas.

The Crew

THE CREW

The Crew

The characters that make up the crew (and spirit) of Calico Jack are an eclectic team hailing from Australia, the UK, France and Indonesia; all Ocean lovers and adventure junkies who chose to live an unconventional life out at sea. Driven by dreams, they pride themselves not just on their hospitability, but in sharing their passion, knowledge and love of the natural world.

The diverse backgrounds and individual quirks of each crew member have instilled Calico Jack with a distinct and unique set of characteristics, giving her a progressive edge on the average liveaboard. Whilst operating cruises which allow intrepid travellers the opportunity to explore some of the most remote and ecologically abundant regions on the planet, the crew take great pride in creating and customising private charters. Whether it’s hardcore diving, recreational snorkelling, free diving, surfing, yoga retreats, wilderness-trekking, bird-watching or a family adventure cruise, the crew revel in personalising trips for their guests and ensuring unforgettable experiences.

The well-being of guests is paramount. Aside from the very experienced dive masters and cruise directors, there are a further 8 crew members onboard, including the captains, engineers, chef and stewards. Each member of staff has been well-trained to ensure their skills and performance meets the high standards of operation and the majority of crew have vast experience working on other liveaboards within the region. The crew revel in getting to know each guest personally; ensuring all individual needs are catered for whilst instilling their sense of adventure and sharing their enthusiasm and ambitions to create and live out the adventures they individually and collectively envisage.

Philosophy

Philosophy

Calico Jack’s philosophy is a simple one: Adventure!

Our passion and our mission is to customise ideal liveaboard adventures to allow our guests the opportunity to explore some of the most ecologically abundant and remote regions on the planet.

Live your dreams

Calico Jack was born of dreams, dreams of the ocean, freedom and escape. The drive to approach such a project was a heady mix of passion, art, irreverence and the refusal to choose the conventional in life. This mix created the momentum and drew a disparate group ever inwards towards the beaches of Indonesia, where the vessel was born upon the sands of southern Sulawesi in the heartland of the Bugis culture. After 36 months of challenges (and some rough times for dreamers) the intentions and drive gave Calico Jack its freedom, firstly freedom from the beach in 2013 and then from the womb of Bira harbour for the maiden voyage in 2014, the dream was now a reality and Calico Jack now lead the way … we are forever following this dream.

Every Action…

It is our intention that these dreams and choices pass through to every guest on board Calico Jack, life needs adventure, there should be fun, there is a time for dreaming. Happiness is a shared experience and hospitality is key, if you feel good then we feel good. This is the purpose of Calico Jack; to search adventure, share discoveries and bring new friends into the Calico Jack experience. All whilst cruising through amazing scenery, with great food, wonderful world class diving and Calico Jacks friendly crew to help make your dreams reality.

Hold on to your freedom

The approach to life expressed here is not an empty statement. It is the approach by which we live, and which you will come to experience if you book a trip on our boat. It is from our outlook on life that our boat charter idea developed to become the “Calico Jack” experience.

Cause and effect

We like the people around us to be happy, and we like showing them the discoveries we have made. Hospitality is not just an empty word for us. If our guests are happy, we feel good, we feel satisfied. Our main task at Calico Charters is to ensure the wellbeing of EVERY ONE of our guests.

We extend our welcome to all who would dream, come and relax with us to enjoy the wonders of nature and open up to the Paradise of Indonesia.
