One of the biggest shark species in the world, the Whale Shark is a natural wonder to behold. As a diver, it is a privilege to encounter one in person. With over 1.4 million hectares of the maritime area, Cenderawasih Bay is the perfect diving destination to see the Whale Sharks in person.
Whale Shark behavior
As we prefaced above, Whale Sharks (Rhincodon typus), are the biggest extant Shark species in the world. Whale Sharks are known as filter-feeding sharks, feeding exclusively on small fishes and planktons. They do this by one of two ways; either by actively pumping water through its massive gills and filtering food particles or ram filtering in which the shark swims forward while keeping its mouth open to push water and food inside the filters.
Its size on average range between 9 to 12 meters in length. However, there have been reports of specimens reaching up to 18 meters long. However, despite its large size, this creature is relatively docile in nature. They are gentle and allow divers to swim in tandem with them. Younger Whale Sharks have even been observed to be playful with divers, further evidencing their harmless nature.
Human culture
The locals who live on floating fishing platforms, also known as Bagans, have a belief that these big fish bring good luck and fortune to fishermen. Hence, they like to toss bait to keep them around and closer to their batons. Though this practice is controversial in some communities due to the dependence it creates between these creatures and human intervention.
Seasons to sight the Whale Shark
In general, the best times to encounter this big fish in Cenderawasih Bay is between August and September. The water conditions are more suitable during this time, allowing a higher chance to encounter the Whale Sharks.
