Located on the southern side of the Bird’s Head peninsula in West Papua, Triton Bay is as remote as you can get from civilization in Indonesia. Within the bay itself there are smaller islands that help funnel nutrient-rich currents to the waters in the bay, creating the perfect environment for healthy coral growth. These factors help contribute to the rich and diverse marine creatures and unique habitats that are home to the endemic species found there. It’s accurate to say that Triton Bay is a modern-day diving frontier, a kind of time capsule that’s preserved the incredible marine ecosystem and is waiting to be explored.
Best times to dive in Triton Bay
There are two main wet seasons in Triton Bay; November to December, and July to August. Rough winds from the south east monsoon also make for challenging weather conditions from June to September (most resorts also close down during this period). The best time to dive is immediately following wet season, between September and December when the water is cooler and marine life is on peak concentration. Another excellent time would be between December and May when visibility as at its clearest.
Another advantage of the remote location of Triton Bay, is the abundance of Whale Sharks that roam the area. These majestic giants are attracted to the baitfish and anchovies in the area. They can also be sighted during their migration season between the months of August – October.
Diving in Triton Bay is really best experienced directly, but trust us, it’ll be well worth your time. It’s a pristine dive destination that will leave you in awe of the unspoiled marine ecosystems it has to offer.
