Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome to Raja Ampat
Sorong, Indonesia
Embarkation
Your expedition begins in Sorong, the gateway to Raja Ampat. Our team will meet you at the airport and transfer you to Calico Jack, where the crew will welcome you aboard and show you to your cabin. Once everyone is settled, we head out for a relaxed check dive in the surrounding reefs – the perfect way to test gear, get comfortable in the water and start spotting the first reef life of the journey. As evening falls, enjoy dinner on deck while the boat begins its overnight cruise south toward the legendary reefs of Misool, one of the most biodiverse marine environments on Earth.
Day 2
The Reefs of Misool
Misool, Raja Ampat
Diving
Wake up to towering limestone islands rising from turquoise water. Today you begin exploring southern Raja Ampat, an underwater paradise famous for its vibrant coral reefs and immense biodiversity. Dives around Wayilbatan feature colourful pinnacles covered in soft corals, sea fans and clouds of reef fish. Barracuda, trevallies and batfish often patrol the currents here. In the afternoon there’s time to explore Misool’s spectacular hidden lagoons by kayak or paddleboard, gliding through calm emerald waters between towering karst cliffs. As darkness falls, an optional night dive reveals a completely different side of the reef.
Day 3
Hidden Lagoons of Balbulol
Balbulol, Raja Ampat
Diving & lagoon exploration
Today’s dives take you through some of Misool’s most vibrant reefs, where coral-covered pinnacles attract large schools of snapper, jacks and bumphead parrotfish. After diving, the adventure continues above the water. Your guides will take the dinghies deep into the hidden lagoons of Balbulol, where narrow passages open into surreal turquoise pools surrounded by jungle-covered cliffs. As evening arrives, keep an eye on the treetops — this remote area is home to the remarkable Palm Cockatoo, often seen returning to roost at sunset.
Day 4
Daram’s Colourful Reefs
Daram Islands
Diving
The reefs around Daram Island are famous for their extraordinary coral density. Many divers describe sites here as feeling like swimming through an underwater garden. Giant sponges, soft corals and sea fans cover the reef slopes in vibrant colours, while reef sharks and Napoleon wrasse occasionally cruise the deeper blue. This is classic Raja Ampat diving — rich coral life, swirling fish schools and endless macro discoveries.
Day 5
Fiabacet Ridge
Southern Raja Ampat
Diving
Today’s dives explore the famous Fiabacet ridge, a vast reef system connecting several islands across southern Raja Ampat. Sites such as Whale Rock, Nudi Rock and Tank Rock combine dramatic underwater topography with some of the richest marine biodiversity in the region. Keep an eye out for pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs and reef sharks, while huge schools of fish sweep across the reef slopes.
Day 6
Magic Mountain & Boo Islands
Boo Islands
Diving
One of the highlights of the expedition. Today you dive Magic Mountain, one of the most celebrated sites in Raja Ampat. This submerged reef ridge often attracts oceanic manta rays, along with large schools of fish and cruising reef sharks. Later dives around Boo Island reveal beautiful coral formations and unique reef structures, including the famous coral “windows” that pierce through the reef.
Day 7
Pulau Koon – Where the Seas Converge
Ceram Sea
Diving
Leaving Raja Ampat behind, the expedition continues west toward the Banda Sea. At Pulau Koon, nutrient-rich currents attract enormous schools of fish. Massive gatherings of red snappers, trevallies, barracuda and batfish swirl across the reef in one of the most impressive fish aggregations in Indonesia. After today’s dives, Calico Jack begins the overnight journey toward the historic Banda Islands.
Day 8
Into the Banda Sea
Banda Islands
Diving
Rising from one of the deepest ocean trenches on Earth, the Banda Islands offer a very different underwater landscape. Volcanic seamounts and steep reef walls plunge into the deep blue, creating ideal conditions for encounters with tuna, barracuda, turtles and occasionally hammerhead sharks. The reefs here are wild, dramatic and beautifully preserved.
Day 9
Banda Neira & the Spice Islands
Banda Neira
Island exploration & diving
This morning you step ashore in Banda Neira, once the centre of the global nutmeg trade. Explore colonial-era streets and visit Fort Belgica, where sweeping views overlook the volcanic island of Banda Api and the surrounding sea. Later in the day, return to the water for dives around the island’s volcanic reefs before finishing with a sunset dive to search for mandarin fish, one of the ocean’s most colourful reef species.
Day 10
Pulau Ai & Run Island
Banda Islands
Diving
Today you explore the outer Banda islands, where pristine coral walls drop into deep blue water. Drift dives along Pulau Ai reveal vibrant reef life and clouds of tropical fish, while nearby Run Island offers beautiful coral gardens and fascinating history — this tiny island was once traded by the British for Manhattan. Exploratory dives in this region often reveal rarely visited reefs and untouched marine habitats.
Day 11
Nusa Laut Reefs
Near Ambon
Final dives
Your final dive day takes place near Nusa Laut, a community-protected marine area known for exceptionally healthy coral reefs. Sites such as Amet Reef are full of life — turtles glide across coral gardens while reef sharks patrol the deeper water. After the final dives, relax on deck as Calico Jack sails toward Ambon for the final evening of the expedition.

• enjoying sunset drinks on deck
With a nearly 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio, the service onboard is attentive while still maintaining the easygoing expedition atmosphere Calico Jack is known for.
Weather and Sea Conditions
Eastern Indonesia sits within the tropical Coral Triangle, meaning warm temperatures and excellent diving conditions throughout most of the year.
For expeditions between Raja Ampat, the Banda Sea and the Maluku Islands, daytime temperatures are typically 28–32°C (82–90°F), with warm evenings around 25–27°C (77–81°F).
Sea temperatures usually range between 27–29°C (80–84°F), making a 3mm wetsuit ideal for most divers.
Conditions during the Banda Sea crossing are generally calm during the expedition season, although the open ocean can occasionally bring stronger currents — one of the reasons this region attracts such spectacular marine life.

Route Direction Options
This expedition operates in both directions, depending on the season and schedule:
- Sorong → Ambon – Begins in Raja Ampat and finishes with macro-rich dives in Ambon Bay.
- Ambon → Sorong – Starts with critter diving in Ambon Bay before progressing through the Banda Sea and ending among Raja Ampat’s iconic reefs.
While the dive regions and highlights remain the same, the order of experiences changes, offering a slightly different rhythm to the journey.
Sailing from Sorong to Ambon aboard Calico Jack, this 11-night expedition traces a rarely travelled route through the eastern reaches of the Coral Triangle, combining iconic biodiversity, open-ocean seamounts, volcanic islands, and world-famous muck diving into a single, unforgettable journey.
The voyage begins in Raja Ampat, where warm, nutrient-rich currents feed some of the most diverse reefs on Earth. Early dives explore the Dampier Strait and surrounding islands, an area renowned for dense fish life, healthy coral systems, manta rays, and rare macro species. Sheltered reefs, submerged ridges, and jetty dives offer a perfect balance of wide-angle spectacle and small critter encounters.
As the expedition moves south and east, the scenery shifts dramatically. Crossing into the Banda Sea, dives become more remote and exploratory. Isolated islands, deep-water drop-offs, and current-swept seamounts attract large schools of fish and pelagic species. Sites such as Koon Island and Manuk are famed for sheer biomass — vast clouds of snapper, barracuda, trevallies, and, with luck, passing sharks and hammerheads.
The Banda Islands themselves offer a rare blend of history and diving. Volcanic walls, dramatic lava flows, and coral gardens sit beneath islands once central to the global spice trade. Between dives, there’s time to step ashore at Banda Neira, exploring colonial forts, nutmeg plantations, and quiet island streets that feel untouched by time.
The journey concludes in Ambon Bay, one of the world’s most celebrated muck diving destinations. Here, the focus shifts from big reefs to extraordinary detail. Frogfish, mimic and wunderpus octopus, ghost pipefish, nudibranchs, and rare endemic species make these final dives a photographer’s dream and a perfect contrast to the open-ocean diving earlier in the trip.
With up to 33–35 dives planned across the itinerary, days follow a steady, well-paced rhythm: multiple dives per day, generous surface intervals, and the occasional night dive when conditions allow. As always, dive sites and daily plans remain flexible, allowing the crew to respond to weather, visibility, and guest experience to deliver the best possible diving throughout the voyage.
This expedition is ideal for experienced, curious divers, those looking to go beyond a single destination and experience the full spectrum of Indonesia’s underwater world in one remarkable crossing.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the trip start and end?
This expedition either starts in Sorong and ends in Ambon or starts in Ambon and ends in Sorong based on the direction of travel. Airport transfers are included on embarkation and disembarkation days.
What’s the difference between Sorong–Ambon and Ambon–Sorong?
The itinerary, dive regions, and total number of dives are essentially the same. The difference is the order in which regions are visited. Sorong–Ambon starts with Raja Ampat and finishes with macro diving in Ambon Bay, while Ambon–Sorong begins with critters and ends with Raja Ampat’s large-scale reefs and fish life.
How many dives are included?
The trip includes up to 33–35 dives, with 3–4 dives per day depending on conditions, plus night dives when suitable.
What level of diving experience is required?
This itinerary is best suited to certified divers with recent experience. Some dives may involve currents or deeper profiles, particularly in the Banda Sea. Advanced certification is not required, but confidence in open-water conditions is recommended.
Is this a good trip for photographers?
Yes — this route offers exceptional variety. Raja Ampat delivers vibrant reefs and schooling fish, the Banda Sea offers dramatic wide-angle scenes and pelagic potential, and Ambon Bay is world-class for macro and critter photography.
What makes this trip different from a Raja Ampat loop?
This is a true crossing expedition, not a return route. It links three very different dive regions — Raja Ampat, the Banda Sea, and Ambon Bay — offering far more diversity in terrain, marine life, and overall experience.
Are non-divers welcome on this trip?
Yes, non-divers are welcome onboard. They can enjoy snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding, island visits, and life aboard Calico Jack, though this itinerary is primarily dive-focused.
Will we go ashore during the trip?
Yes. Weather permitting, there is an island visit in the Banda Islands, including time ashore at Banda Neira to explore its historic town and spice plantations.
Who is this expedition best suited for?
This trip is ideal for divers looking for variety, remoteness, and exploration — those who want to experience multiple iconic regions in one journey rather than staying in a single destination.
