Itinerary

Day 1

Embarkation in Nabire

Your expedition begins in Nabire, the main gateway to Cenderawasih Bay.

Our crew will meet you at the airport or your hotel and transfer you to Calico Jack, where you’ll settle into your cabin and meet the team and fellow guests.

After a full boat orientation and safety briefing we set sail into the calm waters of the bay. Depending on arrival times and conditions we may begin with a relaxed check dive nearby.

Dinner is served on deck as the boat anchors beneath the jungle-covered coastline.

Day 2

Kwatisore Bay — Whale Sharks

We begin the day early in Kwatisore Bay, home to some of the most reliable whale shark encounters in Indonesia.

Local fishermen operate traditional bagan fishing platforms, which attract baitfish — and in turn the whale sharks that feed beneath them.

Small groups rotate through the water for unforgettable close encounters with these gentle giants, either diving or snorkeling depending on conditions.

Later dives explore nearby reefs where soft corals, schooling fish and reef sharks patrol the slopes.

Day 3

Tanjung Mangguar — Sponge Gardens

Today we dive one of Cenderawasih’s most photogenic regions: Tanjung Mangguar.

The reefs here are famous for their massive barrel sponges and colourful soft corals, creating dramatic underwater scenery ideal for wide-angle photography.

Large schools of fusiliers, trevallies and snapper often patrol the reefs while turtles and reef sharks cruise the deeper slopes.

Night diving reveals a completely different side of the reef with octopus, crustaceans and other nocturnal creatures emerging.

Day 4

Wandammen Peninsula — Pelagics & Macro

The steep reefs of the Wandammen Peninsula offer a mix of macro life and open-water encounters.

Expect schooling jacks and barracuda in the blue, while the reefs themselves host nudibranchs, frogfish and other fascinating critters.

Between dives we explore quiet bays and remote beaches rarely visited by other boats.

Day 5

Pulau Sodompari — Seamounts & Schooling Fish

Today’s dives focus on seamounts rising from deep water, which attract large numbers of pelagic fish.

Massive schools of surgeonfish and trevallies circle the pinnacles while reef sharks patrol the currents.

These dynamic dive sites often deliver the classic Coral Triangle experience of huge fish schools and thriving coral reefs.

Day 6

Pulau Roon & Pulau Rippon — Coral Walls

We reach the remote islands of Roon and Rippon, where dramatic coral walls plunge into the depths.

These reefs are covered in colourful soft corals and gorgonian fans, home to pygmy seahorses and other macro treasures.

A highlight here is a shallow WWII aircraft wreck, lying within recreational diving limits and often surrounded by schools of fish.

Day 7

Mioswar — Village Life & Reef Diving

Today we slow the pace slightly with a visit to the island community of Mioswar.

Guests can explore the village, meet local residents and experience a glimpse of everyday life in this remote part of Papua.

The surrounding reefs offer beautiful coral gardens and relaxed diving conditions with abundant reef fish.

Day 8

Pulau Matas & Pulau Rouw — Island Escape

Midway through the expedition we enjoy a more relaxed day around the stunning sand islands of Pulau Matas and Pulau Rouw.

Between dives guests can paddle through the lagoons by kayak or stand-up paddleboard, snorkel over shallow reefs, or simply relax on the beach.

In the evening we often host a beach BBQ dinner, a favourite tradition on Calico Jack expeditions.

Day 9

Wairundi — Reef Sharks & Coral Slopes

The reefs around Wairundi are known for their healthy coral slopes and consistent shark sightings.

Blacktip, whitetip and grey reef sharks are frequently seen cruising the reefs, along with turtles and large schools of snapper.

Macro lovers will also find plenty to explore among the coral bommies.

Day 10

Manokwari — Historic WWII Wrecks

As we approach Manokwari we dive some of the region’s most fascinating WWII wreck sites.

Highlights include the Shinwa Maru, a Japanese cargo vessel resting at around 35 metres, and the nearby Pillbox wreck, both accessible to recreational divers.

These historic wrecks are now thriving artificial reefs covered in corals and surrounded by schools of fish.

Day 11

Final Dives in Cenderawasih Bay

Our final full day of diving offers one last chance to explore the reefs of the bay.

We typically complete two or three final dives, revisiting favourite sites or discovering new ones depending on conditions.

That evening we celebrate the expedition with a farewell dinner as we cruise toward Manokwari.

Day 12

Disembarkation in Manokwari

After breakfast we arrive in Manokwari, where our crew assists with transfers to the airport or your hotel.

Guests depart with incredible memories of whale sharks, pristine reefs, remote islands and one of the most unique dive destinations in Indonesia.

Getting there

Trip Start
Nabire, Papua – Indonesia

This expedition begins in Nabire, a small coastal town on the southern edge of Cenderawasih Bay National Park in Papua.

Guests should plan to arrive at Nabire Airport (NBX) on the morning of Day 1, where our team will meet you and transfer you directly to Calico Jack for embarkation.

Boarding takes place before 12:00 noon, after which the expedition begins as we set sail into Cenderawasih Bay.

Flights to Nabire

Nabire is reached via domestic flights within Indonesia. Most international travellers connect through one of Indonesia’s major hubs before flying onward to Papua.

Typical travel routes include:

International → Jakarta or Bali → Jayapura / Biak / Timika → Nabire

Domestic flight routes change regularly in Papua, so we recommend arriving one day before departure if possible.

Airport Transfers

All guests receive complimentary airport transfers on the first and final day of the trip.

Our crew will meet you at Nabire Airport with a Calico Jack sign and assist with your luggage before transferring you to the boat.

Nabire Airport is located only a few minutes from the town centre, making transfers quick and easy.

Travel Assistance

Travel logistics in Papua can occasionally change due to flight schedules and weather conditions.

Weather and Sea Conditions

Cenderawasih Bay sits close to the equator in Papua, Indonesia, giving the region a warm tropical climate throughout the year. Daytime temperatures typically range between 28–31°C (82–88°F) with warm evenings and occasional short rain showers.

The bay itself is vast and largely protected by surrounding land, meaning sea conditions are often calm and comfortable for liveaboard cruising.

Water Temperature

The ocean temperature remains consistently warm year-round, usually between 28–30°C (82–86°F).

Most divers are comfortable wearing a 3mm wetsuit, although some guests prefer a 5mm suit for extra warmth during multiple dives per day.

Visibility

Visibility in Cenderawasih Bay varies depending on the dive site and tides.

Typical visibility ranges between 10–20 metres, though some areas with heavy plankton — particularly around whale shark feeding sites — may have slightly lower visibility.

These nutrient-rich waters are exactly what attract the incredible marine life the region is famous for.

Currents

Most dive sites in Cenderawasih Bay experience mild to moderate currents, making the diving generally relaxed compared to many parts of Raja Ampat.

Our dive guides always perform current checks before each dive, choosing sites and entry points that ensure safe and enjoyable conditions for the group.

Cenderawasih Bay Liveaboard Expedition

This 11-night Cenderawasih Bay liveaboard expedition explores one of Indonesia’s most unique dive regions, combining unforgettable whale shark encounters, vibrant coral reefs and historic WWII wrecks.

The journey begins in Nabire, heading deep into Cenderawasih Bay where dawn dives in Kwatisore Bay offer some of the most reliable opportunities in the world to encounter whale sharks beneath traditional fishing platforms.

Throughout the expedition you’ll explore the bay’s remarkable variety of dive sites — from the giant sponge gardens of Tanjung Mangguar, ideal for wide-angle photography, to the reefs of Pulau Sodompari and the Wandammen Peninsula, where schooling fish, reef sharks and macro life thrive.

Further north, the islands of Pulau Roon and Pulau Rippon reveal colourful soft-coral walls and a shallow WWII aircraft wreck, while time ashore in Mioswar village offers a glimpse into life in this remote corner of Papua. Midway through the journey we pause at the pristine sand islands of Pulau Matas and Pulau Rouw, perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding and a traditional Calico Jack beach BBQ.

The expedition concludes near Manokwari, where divers explore historic WWII wrecks including the Shinwa Maru and the Pillbox, now thriving artificial reefs within recreational diving limits. Expect around 33 dives across the trip, typically three dives per day with alternating night dives. With a maximum of 10 guests onboard, small dive groups and two experienced guides ensure relaxed dive operations and a truly personal expedition experience.
