Pufferfish vary widely in size, ranging from just a few inches to over two feet in length when fully grown. They have tough, often elastic skin and spines, which become pronounced when the fish inflates. Pufferfish inflate by quickly ingesting huge amounts of water (or sometimes air) into their highly elastic stomachs, making themselves larger and less palatable to predators. Some species of puffer fish can inflate in a matter of seconds as a rapid response to threats.

Toxicity and Defense

One of the most notable features of puffer fish is their toxicity. Many species contain tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin that is found in the fish’s organs and sometimes its skin, making it one of the most poisonous vertebrates in the world. This toxin has no known antidote and can be fatal to humans if ingested. While some species of puffer fish are common, others face threats from habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing—often due to high demand in the food market. Moreover, their unique and specific habitat requirements make them particularly vulnerable to environmental changes. Puffer fish are often caught accidentally as bycatch in nets meant for other species, which contributes to their decline.

In addition to being a food source, puffer fish have cultural significance in various regions. In Japan, the preparation of fugu (puffer fish) is a highly regulated and revered art. Additionally, puffer fish are popular in aquariums around the world due to their interesting appearance and behaviours.
